How can you help me be more proactive in maintaining ourmotors and bearings?
Ted has taken over the role as a chief maintenance supervisor for his facility. As a part of his new role, Ted is responsible for implementing a scheduled maintenance program that included critical pumps and motors serving his production equipment. As partof Ted’s onboarding, he learned that there were several pieces of equipment that were critical for the operation of the plant that could only be serviced during scheduled plant shut downs, or when there was an emergency repair needed.
Ted implemented a predictive maintenance program on the most critical equipment to be completed during shutdowns, but still experienced having to make unplanned repairs and replacements between scheduled predictive services. The cost of down time was high, and the company would lose product if he could not keep the equipment operational. At the very least, he needed to have the repair down time kept to a minimum. Ted reached out to a partner who helped implement a 24/7 conditional monitoring program that utilized Bluetooth smart device technology to see how they could benefit and if it was a cost-effective approach.
Ted and his partner created a plan to monitor several key pieces of equipment having a higher rate of failure between planned shutdown times and implemented a smart beacon program that would provide a 24/7 window into the vibration and motor temperatures of the equipment. They set the parameters for alarms to notify Ted and his team before there was a failure so that parts could be purchased, and production could be halted before product was lost.
Ted’s initiative to utilize new technologies in order to be more proactive in reducing unplanned repairs and failures helped reduce the amount of lost production due to unscheduled repairs, shortening the time taken forrepairs when they did occur.
